September machair

Oil on canvas
30 x 40cm
Rams tethered on the machair in late September. Machair is low-lying land close to the coast, formed of wind-blown sand. The area of machair in Bragar is quite small, but it is still cultivated in the traditional way: it is one of the few places in Lewis and Harris where stooks of oats, rye and barley can be seen in autumn. By mid-October it is cleared of crops and the village sheep are allowed to graze freely on it. Sold
